Traditional burial puts 4.3 million gallons of embalming fluid, 20 million board feet of hardwoods, 64,500 tons of steel for caskets, and 14,000 tons of steel for vaults, 2,700 tons of copper and bronze and 1.6 million tons of concrete in the earth yearly!
At Prairie Oaks Memorial Eco Gardens we don't want the harsh chemicals of traditional embalming in our soil. We offer biodegradable caskets and urns that are made without metal or concrete. When embalming is preferred by a family, the option of using green embalming fluids is available. These fluids do not contain formaldehyde but rather natural oils and alcohols to preserve the body for 3 - 5 days. One burial plot at Prairie Oaks is adequate for one body or up to six urns.

The natural, or green, burial method starts with the body preparation, which uses no embalming fluid or a non formaldehyde-based formula. Green burials can cost less than $3,000.

We make it possible for you to literally become a part of the land preservation and restoration projects with the burial or cremation of your earthly remains. Tony Weber, founder of Prairie Oaks Memorial Eco Gardens, has placed the property into a land conservancy to guarantee that it can never be used for anything other than a cemetery. "When the cemetery is full, it will be a prairie-like park, and people will be able to go there and picnic." says Weber.
